Sleep Disorder Diagnosis
Effective treatment for a sleep disorder begins with a careful diagnosis of the symptoms, from sleep diaries to advanced sleep studies. Diagnosis in most sleep clinics of the sleep disorder begins with a complete history and focused physical exam as well as the standard use of questionnaires that identify your symptoms and document your sleep history.
During the diagnostic period the doctor at the sleep center or sleep clinic may order one or more of several tests to further identify the type of sleep disorder . These tests help doctors determine which treatment will be the most effective for the condition the patient might be having:
-Actigraphy tracks your sleep -wake cycles at home using a small device you wear on your wrist.
-Sleep Study (polysomnogram), this is an overnight evaluation that measures brainwave activity, eye movements, breathing function, oxygen levels, heart rate and muscle activity.
-Multiple sleep latency test, this is when the doctors observe while the patient naps throughout the day to measure the time it takes the patient to fall asleep and enter the REM sleep. This test is often used alongside the polysomnogram.
Medications and somatic treatment may provide the most rapid symptomatic relief from sleep disturbances. Some disorders, such as narcolepsy and insomnia, are best treated pharmacologically. Others, such as chronic and primary insomnia, may be more amenable to behavioral interventions, with more durable results. But overall is recommended highly that if a patient suspects they might have a disorder they should contact a sleep clinic for comprehensive sleep medicine immediately.
Chronic disorders in childhood are under-reported and under-tested. Sleep-phase disruption is also common among adolescents, whose school schedules are often incompatible with their natural circadian rhythm. Special equipment may be required for treatment of several disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, snoring and such. A sleep disorder can be effectively treated with a proper early diagnosis.
